Description:
Selfheal is a common perennial weed, found in most types of turf and grassy areas throughout the UK. It forms as a dense mat, and will easily tolerate close mowing, which makes it a major nuisance on fine turf luxury lawns.
Selfheal has oval leaves which are bourne in pairs. The surface of the leaves can be slightly hairy with scalloped edges. The can often be seen showing a purple tinge, especially where the lawn is mown very short.
The purple flowers are bourne in clusters and are seen between June and October. The flowers are reminiscent to those of Bugle.
Selfheal can grow on a most types of soil.
Control:
Hand weeding is possible for a small number of plants where individual plants can be dug up.
If the Selfheal problem is severe, then use the appropriate selective weed killer. If you are lucky a single application may do the trick, however if the weed remains apply another treatment 6 weeks after the initial application.
